- Story Text: Street protests continued on Thursday (January 24) night in the Azerbaijani town of Ismaili 200 kilometres northwest of the capital Baku despite heavy police presence. Special police forces entered the town on Thursday morning.
Sound of gunshots and loud explosion could be heard in the Ismaili centre in the late hours of Thursday as police tried to disperse residents gathered in the town centre. One man had been wounded and taken away in the back of a truck.
On Wednesday (January 23) several hundred residents had gathered outside the residential building of local governor, torched vehicles and houses, demanding his resignation. Protesters also targeted a hotel, smashing windows and spewing debris into rooms. The protest was sparkled by a car incident in the town.
The Ismaili district police said on Thursday (January 24) that several law enforcement officers were injured while trying to restore order overnight and that additional forces were dispatched to the city. Some protesters were taken to local hospital by emergency ambulances for treatment.
