- Story Text: Fighting has flared again in Nagorno-Karabakh, the disputed Armenian enclave in the former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan.
Unofficial reports claim that more than 100 people have been killed during the last week in gun and rocket battles between Azeri forces and Armenians living in the enclave.
Fighting on Friday (January 10) centred around the devastated village of Karkizhakhan, on the road between the two main Armenian towns of Stepanakert and Susha.
The village has twice changed hands in the fighting and is currently controlled by the Azeris. Army units are using helicopters to fire on Armenian snipers and to evacuate Azeris trapped in the area.
A unit of Russian troops stationed in Stepanakert under the former Soviet army command and now caught up in the fighting claim that they have been forgotten by central government. They say they now have no commander, no food or accomodation and are suffering losses in the crossfire. The troops are demanding to be repatriated.
