  • Story Text: Two people were killed and one was wounded in Azerbaijan's capital Baku on Wednesday (March 15) when 30 members of a mutinous elite interior ministry force attacked a local police station.

    The attack took place at 6 p.m. (1400 GMT) and wrecked talks between the government and the force, which is demanding President Haydar Aliyev's resignation.

    Interior Minister Ramil Usubov ordered the elite OPON unit (special-designation police unit) to be disbanded on Monday after some of its members seized administrative buildings in two towns in northern Azerbaijan.

    Earlier on Wednesday the OPON threatened to march on the former Soviet republic's capital to force Aliyev to resign.

    President Haydar Aliyev said the country was on the brink of civil war and vowed to put down what he called a coup attempt.

    Aliyev said Deputy Interior Minister Rovshan Javadov was trying to overthrow him by leading a mutiny of the elite OPON police force.
