- Story Text: Armenian government forces advanced to the edges of Tauz in northern Azerbaijan on Thursday (March 9), positioning themselves within striking distance of a key rail and road junction, after several days of fighting.
Clashes, involving tanks and heavy artillery, were concentrated along the northern part of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which have been observing a loose ceasefire for about the past year.
In the village of Allabeyli, just south of Tauz, residents were digging through the rubble of several homes destroyed by Armenian shelling.
A local Azeri commander said five soldiers had been killed and at least three wounded in the fighting and reporters counted 10 injured civilians in a local hospital.
On Thursday (March 9), dozens of grieving villagers gathered for a funeral for an Azeri soldier killed in the fighting.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been in a state of virtual war for nearly seven years over the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, a region in Azerbaijan mostly populated by ethnic Armenians which lies south-east of Tauz.
The fighting in the northern border region, 400 km (250 miles) north of the capital Baku, involves Armenian regular troops, rather than ethnic Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Armenian government has repeatedly denied direct involvement in the Karabakh war although most independent observers say it plays a central role.
Tauz strategically situated on the main east-west rail and road junction linking Baku and the rest of Azerbaijan. It is also the only route into Georgia 70 km (43 miles) to the north.
