- Story Text: Azerbaijan opposition launches its election campaign.
About 20,000 opposition supporters rallied on the streets of
Azerbaijan's capital Baku on Saturday (September 10) calling for the
resignation of the President Ilham Aliyev and for free and fair November 6 parliamentary elections.
In its first rally since the election campaign was officially launched on September 7, tens of thousands of supporters of the opposition block "Freedom" marched through the centre of Baku waving orange flags - the colour of the Ukrainian revolution, adopted by the Azeri opposition as well - and shouting "Resignation" and "Freedom".
"Today we begin our election campaign. Today at this big rally block "Freedom" shows that there is a real alternative [to the current regime] in Azerbaijan and we will not tolerate another election fraud, but we will do everything through peaceful means," said Ali Kerimli, leader of the opposition party, "The People's front of Azerbaijan".
The party headed by Kerimli, along with Musavat movement and Azerbaijan Democratic Party formed the opposition block "Freedom" which earlier have staged several mass rallies in Baku.
The West and the ex-Soviet states are closely watching for the signs that the November election may spark popular protests in the oil-rich Caspian state similar to those that have overturned the governments of Georgia, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan.
