- Story Text: With a boat trip on the river 'Spree' in Berlin started the German premiere of director Richard Curtis' ('Notting Hill') latest comedy 'Radio Rock Revolution' (Original title: 'The boat that rocked') on Tuesday (April 7).
The film is based in the wild Sixties and tells the story of young radio rebels, who tthink about ways to bring their idea of rock music to the listeners. They start a pirate radio station to air their music and lifestyle to the world - from a boat in the middle of the north sea. But the music pirates are not at all isolated in the deep sea - being completely autonomous, they soon become legendary.
Director Richard Curtis told Reuters TV at the premiere in Berlin the film meant a memory to his childhood. "Well, I was a little boy, like there is a little boy in the beginning of the movie, who is listening to the radio underneath his pillow and that was me. And I went to a boarding school and the disc jockey's on the radio were my only friends. So I used to dream about what life would be like on that boat. So this is a film about that dream", Curtis said.
Also actor Bill Nighy could remember the days, when he listened to the pirate radio.
"They only had your parents on the radio. Which was basically people in their best clothes singing abot the moon or something. Then Jimi Hendrix burned his guitar and you got the Rolling Stones and The Who and everything. You couldn't hear it anywhere until the pirates came along and you could tune in. And the cool thing was the government made it illegal, so you became an outlaw just by tuning in", Nighy added.
The film was of course shot on a boat, which according to actor Philip Seymour Hoffman had enough space, but the rooms were still too small to be really comfaortable. "It wasn't that small actually, it was a good size boat as you see in the movie, it has space you know. The rooms itself are kind of small, we were outside a lot, under deck", he explained. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
