- Story Text: U.S. actor Will Smith is in Germany to promote his latest movie "I am Legend" about the last survivor of a worldwide pandemic.
Hollywood actor Will Smith was in the best of spirits when he promoted his latest movie "I am Legend" during the Germany premiere in Berlin on Monday (January 7), joking with reporters and voicing his support for U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama of the Democrats.
"I am Legend" is based on a novel by Richard Matheson and tells the story of Robert Neville (Will Smith) who has to face life as the last man on earth following a worldwide pandemic which turns everyone around him into cannibalistic mutants infected by an aggressive virus.
"What would you do if you were the last person on earth?,"
Smith asked reporters during his news conference in Berlin.
"That idea just always popped in my mind and then connected to the idea of the last man on earth is not alone."
"I guess there is a child-like movie fan inside of me that those concepts connected to something for the first time I read the script. I thought it was just a beautiful opportunity for an actor, for a director, even for a writer just to be able to let your mind and your imagination and that little child inside of you run wild on a big canvas," Smith said.
Smith, playing military virologist Robert Neville, fails to stop the pandemic and during the evacuation of Manhattan, both Neville's wife Zoe (Salli Richardson) and his daughter Marley die (played by Will Smith's own daughter Willow).
"My daughter loved it," Will Smith said at the news conference ahead of the screening.
"She was born on October 31st so she is a Halloween baby and she just loves things like that. With her friends at school, she thought it was so cool that her character died in the movie," Smith said with a big smile.
Asked to comment on U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama, Smith said a president Obama "would be -- or will be -- fantastic. That's something I'm looking forward to," Smith said.
