- Story Text: Actor Richard Gere was the star guest at the European premiere of the Disney blockbuster "Pocahontas" in London last Friday (October 6).
The launch was beamed from London's Odeon Leicester Square cinema by satellite to screenings all over Britain.
Gere, estranged husband of Cindy Crawford, arrived alone in a limousine and was casually dressed in a brown jacket, white shirt and dark trousers. The Pretty Woman star, who has not been in Britain since he made First Knight with Sean Connery last November, arrived to loud cheers.
Thousands of fans greeted him warmly to the show to raise money for the British Red Cross and Survival International, which supports ethnic minorities.
The voice of Pocahontas, Irene Bedard, and actor Richard Grant also attended the screening.
Pocahontas in the 33rd Disney animation and is loosely based on the story of Captain John Smith, an adventurer who sailed to America in 1607 with a villainous crew in search of fortune.
On arrival they fought the natives and Smith's life was saved by an Indian girl Pocahontas, the daughter of the chief.
Smith's voice was provided by Australian actor Mel Gibson, who even sings in the film. "Pocahontas" is the latest in a string of successful Disney animated features, following hot on the heels of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and the Lion King.
Since its massive premiere in New York's Central Park, "Pocahontas" has taken more than 137 million U.S. dollars across the United States. It is currently at the top of the Australian box office. The film will open across Europe this autumn. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
