- Story Text: The cast of AMC's hit series "Mad Men" took to the red carpet for the premiere of the much anticipated third season of the 1960s period drama.
The cast of AMC's "Mad Men" took to the red carpet Monday (August 3) for the premiere of the third season of the hit drama series.
Attending the event at the Director's Guild of America in Hollywood were the stars of the series, including Emmy nominees Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, and John Slattery, and celebrity guests included fans of the series, comedienne Sarah Silverman and actor Steve Buscemi.
"Mad Men" is an hour long drama about the cutthroat advertising industry in 1960s New York City, at the fictional Sterling Cooper Ad Agency.
Jon Hamm, recently nominated for his second Emmy award for his role as advertising executive Don Draper in the show, believes that the show has developed a true cult following among its faithful viewers because of its clever writing.
"I think that the more people are exposed to the show, the more they like it. It's a show that takes its time telling the story, and it's a show that is not for everybody, but I think the people that do like the show really love the show, and we hope to make sure that there are more of these people coming on to season three," "Mad Men" actor Jon Hamm said.
He also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the television community for his Emmy nomination for outstanding lead actor, as well as the show's 16 nominations overall.
"It was an incredible week to get, not only nominated myself, but to have the show be so recognized across so many departments and so many people, it's a testament to how many incredibly hardworking people are really good at their jobs on our show, and it's nice that it's recognized by our peers," Hamm said.
The show captures the high glamour of the Kennedy era with stylish costumes and hairstyles, and has been recognized with two Emmy nominations for art direction. The series is wildly popular with critics and viewers alike, and it broke ground in 2008 when it became the first basic cable program to win an award for outstanding series. "Mad Men" ended its second season with record ratings, and the cast and crew are hopeful that the series' success will translate into another robust season.
"I think it's a very interesting period so it lends to good storylines, but I think there is so much more to the show that makes it interesting, I think if it was just about the sixties it would get boring, but there is so much more that keeps you interested in it," Elisabeth Moss, who is nominated for an Emmy award for lead actress in a drama series, said.
Actor John Slattery, who plays the embittered ad agency partner Roger Sterling, is nominated for an Emmy in the supporting actor category this year, agreed that the writing for the show is the key to its success.
"The scripts have been better, each script gets better. I think it is who these people are, it's not that long a jump in time, it really is surprising, it goes surprising places," actor John Slattery said.
The creator of "Mad Men," Matthew Weiner, set out to tell the story about an era that remains fascinating to many people. Yet, he was surprised at the response he received from the television community and audiences as a whole with the recent slew of Emmy nominations.
"I'm thrilled, I haven't gotten over it, and I'm really enjoying it. I have to say, the most important part of all of it is really knowing that there's an audience that has an intimate relationship with the show -- that I really didn't expect. As a writer and an entertainer, that's all you want," says "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner.
The Third Season of "Mad Men" premieres on AMC on August 16. The 61st Prime-time Emmys will be handed out in Los Angeles on September 20 in a live broadcast ceremony. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
