Did you see her tonight? She just looks heavenly." But I didn't know the person and I was very impressed about how generous she is, how fun to work with her." And even if you don't practice any religion we all pray, when things get wrong, we all close our eyes and we hope that there's somebody stronger and wiser and more able than us that can help us." AUTHOR ELIZABETH GILBERT POSING FOR PHOTOGRAPHS (SOUNDBITE) (English) ELIZABETH GILBERT, 'EAT PRAY LOVE' AUTHOR, SAYING: "It's like the book is mine, but the movie is Julia's, and you'll see that when you see the movie, it's hers. She owns it, she captured it, she's captivating in it, and I also feel this lovely sense of transition, like, 'Eat Pray Love' is not mine anymore. It's been turned over to somebody who's actually big enough to carry it, you know? Because it outgrew me a long time ago, so I feel happy and relieved and excited to be here and watch that happen." ELIZABETH GILBERT GREETS FRIEND ON RED CARPET (SOUNDBITE) (English) ELIZABETH GILBERT, 'EAT PRAY LOVE' AUTHOR, SAYING: "It turns out there are a lot of women who have also been on the bathroom floor at 3-o-clock in the morning in a puddle of tears wondering what went wrong with their great plans for their lives and trying to figure out how they can possibly recover something of their original self and I think the book is like a giant permission slip for a lot of women to ask themselves those difficult, meaningful, dangerous questions like 'why am I here?' and 'what do I want to do with my one, wonderful life?'. - Story Text: Hollywood superstars Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem hit the red carpet in New York City on Tuesday (August 10), for the worldwide premiere of their new film, 'Eat Pray Love'.
The film, based on the best-selling novel by Elizabeth Gilbert, tells the true story of Liz, a thirty-two-year-old who has everything a modern woman could desire but finds herself stuck in an unhappy marriage. In order to turn her life around she decides to divorce her husband and travel the world for a year in search of happiness and true balance in her life.
Playing the role of Liz, Roberts traveled to Italy, India and Bali. The actress reportedly gained 10 pounds whilst filming in Europe, declaring in one scene it was her 'no carb left behind experiment'.
When asked about her most memorable food moment, Roberts said a bowl, or rather several bowls, of pasta came to mind.
"Probably the spaghetti. I think so. Just it was a lot of pasta, it was a hot day. It was delicious the first you know, three bowls. And from there it was like wow, ok," Robert said.
On the red carpet, the Hollywood star warmly embraced Gilbert, upon whom her character is based. But the actress admitted she tried to avoid the author as she was preparing for her role.
"I met her in Rome and spent some time with her but really just, you know, as an actor you have to find your own voice for that person and I, so I kind of specifically stayed away from her. Did you see her tonight? She just looks heavenly," Roberts said.
Starring alongside Roberts is Javier Bardem, who plays the role of Felipe, the love interest for Roberts' character. The Spanish heartthrob was full of praise for his co-star.
"The great actress that she is, we all knew, that's not, I'm not discovering anything here. But I didn't know the person and I was very impressed about how generous she is, how fun to work with her," Bardem said.
The actor said if he had to choose between eating, praying or loving- he couldn't decide and would have to have all three.
"That's why it's called 'Eat Pray Love' I think in the movie it talks about the importance of feeding yourself for things that make you be healthier and the three of them are very important. And even if you don't practice any religion we all pray, when things get wrong, we all close our eyes and we hope that there's somebody stronger and wiser and more able than us that can help us," the actor explained.
Gilbert admitted that although she was initially hesitant to see her life played out on the big screen, in the end, she felt relieved and paid tribute to Roberts' portrayal.
"It's like the book is mine, but the movie is Julia's, and you'll see that when you see the movie, it's hers. She owns it, she captured it, she's captivating in it, and I also feel this lovely sense of transition, like, 'Eat Pray Love' is not mine anymore. It's been turned over to somebody who's actually big enough to carry it, you know? Because it outgrew me a long time ago, so I feel happy and relieved and excited to be here and watch that happen," Gilbert said.
Published in 2006, 'Eat Pray Love' has sold some eight million copies. Gilbert said the book had clearly struck a spiritual chord with some women.
"It turns out there are a lot of women who have also been on the bathroom floor at 3-O'clock in the morning in a puddle of tears wondering what went wrong with their great plans for their lives and trying to figure out how they can possibly recover something of their original self and I think the book is like a giant permission slip for a lot of women to ask themselves those difficult, meaningful, dangerous questions like 'why am I here?' and 'what do I want to do with my one, wonderful life?', Gilbert said.
