- Story Text: Action movie fans packed London's Leicester Square on Monday night (August 9) for a chance to see their Hollywood action hero, Sylvester Stallone and local boy done good, Jason Statham attend the UK premiere of their latest film, 'The Expendables'.
For Statham who plays former SAS blade expert, Lee Christmas, said the prospect of being directed by one of his childhood hero's was an opportunity not to be missed:
"This is the kind of film I respond to and I have always want to be a part of. You dream of doing these kinds of films because I am in the action game and who better to be directed by than Sly."
At 64, Stallone may not pack the box office clout that he once did, but the iconic actor continues to drawn large crowds at his premieres.
Talking to Reuters Television at the West End premiere, the actor/director talked of the need for onscreen role models for younger audiences.
"Young men like physical examples, they really do…I know I did… And I think that I might be one of the intrigues for these young guys."
Also in attendance at the London premiere was veteran director Michael Winner. Film production and news website IMDB has slated Stallone to remake the 1974 version of his film 'Death Wish'.
'The Expendables' boasts the who's who in action cinema. Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Arnold Swarzenegger, Jet Li and Rocky 4's Dolph Lundgren all participate in this hi octane adventure.
And it is with this impressive cast line up that the actor director hopes claw back an audience with cinemagoers looking for an alternative to the big budget CGI Super Hero film genre.
"Every generation has there own heroes that is why you have super heroes because it has evolved into that. Stallone explained. "You can't get much more. They have gone so far. Like after Avatar I would say, 'Stop! You can't get any better.' You know what I mean, let's go back to basics."
Stallone's character, Barney Ross, heads up a hard-core group of mercenaries. Taking on what appears to be a routine assignment to overthrow a ruthless drug baron in the South American country of Vilena. Ross and his men soon find themselves on a suicide mission with little option to fight or die.
'The Expendables' opens in UK cinemas nationwide from August 19. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
