- Story Text: Thousands of people packed London's Leicester Square on Saturday night (September 30) for the star-studded world premiere of Sylvester Stallone's latest movie, "Assassins." Pop queen Madonna made a surprise appearance at the cinema, stealing the limelight as scores of celebrity guests arrived for the premiere in pouring rain.
Stallone was joined by co-stars Antonio Banderas and Julianne Moore at the gala screening. Banderas was accompanied by his new girlfriend, Melanie Griffiths.
Banderas and Madonna are soon to star in the new film Evita, based on the life of Eva Peron. They are currently in London to record the film's soundtrack.
In "Assassins", Stallone plays a veteran hit-man, Robert Rath, who becomes the target of an up-and-coming rival, Miguel Bain (Banderas) Rath, disenchanted with his shadowy lifestyle, is trying to get out - before Bain can kill him and claim his crown. Rath is helped by a brilliant surveillance expert, Electra (Julianne Moore).
The three become locked in a battle of wits that will ultimately leave at least one person dead.
Director Richard Donner, known for "Superman" and the "Lethal Weapon" trilogy, filmed "Assassins" in Portland (Oregon), Seattle and Puerto Rico.
The film is Stallone's first since "Judge Dredd". Now the highest-paid actor of all time, he will soon begin production on the action-thriller "Daylight." Banderas, who appeared in "Desperado" and "Interview with the Vampire" and is one of Hollywood's hottest actors.
Producer Joel Silver says it was Stallone's idea to cast Banderas in the film. Although Banderas only made his U.S. film debut in 1992 with "The Mambo Kings," he actually has 43 films to his credit.
Moore, who appeared in "The Fugitive" and "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle," was last seen alongside Hugh Grant in "Nine Months" "Assassins" will open in the U.K. on October 6, closely followed by releases in the U.S. and Europe. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
