- Story Text: The sweltering hot weather couldn't stop thousands of screaming fans from descending on the Japanese premiere of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' at Roppongi Hills Square in Tokyo, where a mock pirate ship was set up for the occasion on Monday (July 10, 2006).
The premiere came shortly after the film's debut in the United States made a record 132 million U.S. dollars (USD) in its first three days.
The film also broke the previous single-day record with 55 million dollars (USD) on Friday (July 7) beating the previous record set by "Star wars: episode 3 - revenge of the Sith".
"It feels fantastic. We even broke another record and had the biggest European opening, in seven markets we beat Harry Potter. So that's very exciting," producer Jerry Bruckheimer told the media at a news conference before the Japanese premiere.
Actor Johnny Depp was calmer about the record-breaking opening weekend.
"I haven't broken anything personally. I just showed up along for the ride," the actor said on the red carpet.
But he was pleased to note that the sequel had been well-received by a wide range of people.
"To have not only the film but the character to be embraced to such a degree by a kind of a very surprisingly wide-ranging, a wide range of people is very touching. To me the five-year-old kids that start to imitate captain Jack is very moving," he said.
Depp is reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the movie, a sequel to the blockbuster hit 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl', which grossed 653 million U.S. dollars at the worldwide box office.
Also returning to the big screen as Will Turner is British heart-throb Orlando Bloom, who jumped at the chance to engage in more swashbuckling action.
"Fantastic. I mean we had so much fun making the film and the fact that obviously people have come out to see it is great. As an actor it is wonderful to be a part of such a popular film, you know, it's what we all dream of," Bloom said on the red carpet event in Tokyo.
