- Story Text: Following up on the triumph of his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, Director Peter Jackson has released a remake of the epic movie "King Kong", and the cast were out in full to support it at the European premiere in Berlin on Wednesday (December 07), despite the cold.
"I think the audience is going to be wildly entertained, it's one of the most incredible action adventure fantasies I think in the history of film. I am really proud to be part of it", actor Jack Black told Reuters.
While sticking in outline to the 1933 classic by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, Jackson has added modern special effects and action sequences. Jack Black plays a risk-taking, Orson Wellesian producer-director, Carl Denham, who books a steamer to uncharted South Pacific territory in the hope of filming an adventure feature there with his actress Ann Darrow, played by Naomi Watts.
"The pressure that I am always under is to want to make a film that I would enjoy, that I don't disappoint myself, I am not making it for other people or for the box office or you know, for the box office charts, all that I want to do is to make an entertaining movie, and particularly a film that I'd enjoy watching", Jackson said at the premiere.
"If somebody else made a remake of King Kong, I would be in the front row with my bag of popcorn sitting there wanting to see it, and then the movie I have made represents the movie I would want to see, so from that point of view it is a very personal film, and I'll just have to hope other people enjoy it as well."
To Oscar winner Adrien Brody, who plays Watts' love interest, screenwriter Jack Driscoll, "King Kong"'s enduring appeal is clear.
"I think you know, it's a really rich, deep film, surprisingly enough. I was surprised how emotionally moved that I would be when I saw this," he said.
"It is a tragic love story, but a wonderful adventure, exciting and gory at times, and just full of, it captures so many elements and all of them don't conflict with one another, which is very hard to do. So I am really impressed with Peter Jackson, he has guided us on a very intimate level, the characters are all based on truths, they are all unique and they all have some special quality, and then the film has the best special effects I've ever seen in any movie in my life, it's fully exciting, whether I was in it or not I would love to go see this so it's great."
The movie has been the big budget lead Brody has been waiting for.
"It's a big break for me in a lot of ways. It's Universal's biggest film and it's my first real chance at a romantic leading man, and I've worked long and hard to be able to get a shot at this, and I am really honoured that Pete gave me that opportunity, and I'm happy, I'm happy about it."
One of the biggest pressures actress Naomi Watts had felt, she said, was knowing that the film had been done so well and had done so well the first time around, but she said the making of it had been a lot of fun.
"I think the physical stuff was definitely the hardest stuff to do, that took a lot of time as well, so that was quite debilitating. But other than that the best stuff, just being on a set with someone like Peter Jackson, Andy Serkis, Adrian Brody and Jack Black and all the rest of the cast everyday, it was something good happening, great surprises along the way. Great scriptwriting, Fran (Walsh) and Philippa (Boyens) always trying to search for the best ideas and changing the script all the time and that was fun." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
