- Story Text: Whilst the capital of the UK braves the bad weather to salute Johnny Depp's latest venture, the actor remains modest about the cancellation of the Golden Globes that singled him out for a nomination and early Oscar buzz.
For Johnny Depp, there are films and there are Tim Burton films.
The Hollywood actor has teamed up with director Burton for the sixth time in "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," a blood-spattered adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical that has impressed the critics. The New York Times' A.O. Scott called it "something close to a masterpiece," and Depp, as a pale-faced 19th century serial killer out for revenge, has been singled out for a performance that earned him a Golden Globe nomination and early Oscar buzz.
But the cancellation of the globes has left him relatively undisturbed: Maybe it is my fault (jokes). I would say, to say that I am disappointed about the Golden Globes, I can't...I mean I am disappointed for the Hollywood Foreign Press (Association) that they can't put their show on but at the same time on the grand scale in Hollywood and what's going on with the writers' strike and what that grinding hole in the industry has come to has put a lot of people out of work so that's much more concerning I'd say."
Co-star Helena Bonham-Carter who recently gave birth to a baby girl, said:
"I'm up there with supporting the writers cause I know that, for me writing is paramount, the script is paramount and particularly with 'Sweeney Todd', it's the best written part ever and that's where I get my satisfaction from. "
And as for husband-director Tim Burton, it's all about making movies:
"No, nothing surprises me I make a movie because I like making movies I don't think about those other things too much."
Also attending the premier was New York music producer Mark Ronson, who collaborated most recently with British singer Amy Winehouse on 'Valerie';.
Winehouse who has recently been in the press more for her public meltdowns than for her music has been nominated for six Grammys.
"I haven't spoken to her, no but hopefully we're gonna be doing some shows together around the Grammys."
