I mean truly before Vidal changed the way we looked at hair dressing and the way we looked at cutting hair. And the spotlight that he put on hair dressers and made consumers more aware of the skill that went into it. He was a rock star. And he made hair dressers rock stars. And he truly revolutionized the industry." (SOUNDBITE) (English) VIDAL SASSOON, SAYING: "Obviously so many people have learned the system. They way of cutting, the way we do things. From all over the world. Right now we have two academies in Shanghai. I know it's hard to believe but we do. I just feel very fortunate, grateful and obviously a little humbled that we started something in London and it became international. And you never expect that when you start." (SOUNDBITE) (English) CRAIG TEPER, DIRECTOR, SAYING: "Perhaps his greatest legacy is perhaps not only did he create his own saloons but he created schools and trained thousand of hairdressers who went on to train thousands of hair dressers. And it's really six degrees of separation. I mean there are very few hairdressers in the world that aren't touched by Sassoon in some way or haven't been trained by someone who was trained by someone who was trained by him. So he's the seed in the middle of the whole." (SOUNDBITE) (English) VIDAL SASSOON, SAYING: "I think that Victoria Beckham wears one of the great looks of the time, yes, at this stage. There's just too much, sorry darling, just too much long-hanging hair not even cut. And I object to that very strongly." VIDAL SASSOON PAN UP TO POSTER

- Story Text: The rags to riches life story of hair stylist extraordinaire, Vidal Sassoon, hit the big screen with its premiere in Los Angeles Tuesday (February 15).
The film, "Vidal Sassoon The Movie," trails the early life and groundbreaking career of the man who became synonymous with style, and whose work influenced generations of hairdressers around the world.
"I just feel very fortunate, grateful and obviously a little humbled that we started something in London and it became international," says Sassoon, 83, reflecting on nearly 7 decades working with hair, having first started as a hairdresser's apprentice at age 14.
But it was during the fashion-forward 1960s when he really started to make his mark -- creating the Nancy Kwan bob for the celebrated actress in 1963 and Mia Farrow's iconic pixie haircut in the 1968 film "Rosemary's Baby."
"Vidal really was the industry," says Tabatha Coffey, "I mean truly before Vidal changed the way we looked at hair dressing and the way we looked at cutting hair. And the spotlight that he put on hair dressers and made consumers more aware of the skill that went into it. He was a rock star. And he made hair dressers rock stars. And he truly revolutionized the industry."
The director of the film, Craig Teper, spoke of Sassoon's legacy in the industry, having helmed a global empire of hairstyling academies, salons, and popular haircare product lines.
"There are very few hairdressers in the world that aren't touched by Sassoon in some way or haven't been trained by someone who was trained by someone who was trained by him," says Teper.
So who rocks the best look in this day and age? Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, according to the man himself.
"I think that Victoria Beckham wears one of the great looks of the time, yes, at this stage," says Sassoon of the British celebrity, who has been known to sport her own Sassoon-esque haircut. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
