We really went to every length to be as accurate and as real as possible. And the fact we started off with an idea and I feel we accomplished that idea. And I think that's pretty rewarding in this day and age in cinema." (SOUNDBITE) (English) MICHAEL PENA, ACTOR, SAYING: " I think it's a different style of film making. I haven't seen too many movies like this that actually use this style. Kind of documentary style. I mean it must be trouble for them when they are shooting c-g-i to be like there with you and there running and keeping the alien perfectly in frame. I don't know, I don't know how they did that. But I think it lends itself to reality and I think it's perfect for the tone of this movie." (SOUNDBITE) (English) MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ, ACTRESS, SAYING: "It's a visceral experience. It's an auditory experience. Because guns are blasting every five seconds. Explosions are going off. The smell of gasoline. And when you come home at night and you are spitting out all this black stuff. It's like you really do. And you have to jump into the bathtub and just soak in saltwater because the pain from running around all day. It feels real. It felt like an obstacle course everyday." (SOUNDBITE) (English) BRIDGET MOYNAHAN, ACTRESS, SAYING: "I think you can think of an alien invasion and it can get a little kitschy at times. And the fact that he shot it in such a realistic sense and more like a documentary. It just adds to the fear of the possibility and the vulnerability of us as a country or as a world." - Story Text: Aaron Eckhart and the cast of "Battle:LA" attended the film's premiere in Los Angeles Tuesday night. (March 8).
Eckhart stars as Sgt. Michael Nantz who leads a team of Marine's in the fight against alien invaders in the last battleground left, Los Angeles. Eckhart said it was important to make sure a movie filled with aliens and explosions remains grounded in the struggles of the characters.
"The fact that it's as real as can be in a movie, in my opinion. We really went to every length to be as accurate and as real as possible. And the fact we started off with an idea and I feel we accomplished that idea. And I think that's pretty rewarding in this day and age in cinema," Eckhart said.
Eckhart stayed in character throughout the shooting of the film and even broke his arm but refused to stop shooting because of the injury. He said he felt that since a Marine wouldn't do, that neither should he.
The battle scenes were shot in Louisiana, not Los Angeles but Michelle Rodriguez called the experience of seeing LA recreated "gnarly" due to realism of the sets and to the extent minor details were recreated. And once the battle scenes began it was easy to get immersed in the environment.
"It's a visceral experience. It's an auditory experience. Because guns are blasting every five seconds. Explosions are going off. The smell of gasoline. And when you come home at night and you are spitting out all this black stuff," said Michelle Rodriguez, adding, "it feels real."
Director Jonathon Liebesman decided to utilize various film technique that are not normally used in alien invasion movies. He believes using the guerrilla and video methods normally used in documentary films created a more realistic world that the viewer could relate to. For many of the cast it helped make the story more real and terrifying.
"I think you can think of an alien invasion and it can get a little kitschy at times. And the fact that he shot it in such a realistic sense and more like a documentary. It just adds to the fear of the possibility and the vulnerability of us as a country or as a world," Bridget Moynahan said.
