- Story Text: Sharon Stone is back in the role that made her a Hollywood superstar 14 years ago. Stone's sexually charged character Catherine Tramell, who got away with murder in 'Basic Instinct', has relocated to London for 'Basic Instinct 2'. In the sequel Tramell is older, smarter, richer... and under suspicion for murder again.
At the world premiere of 'Basic Instinct 2' on Wednesday (March 15) Stone said her old character presented some new challenges.
"You know, I thought that after playing it the first time that it would be a breeze to play it the second time but it was actually much more complex to play it with more experience, more life experience," Stone said on the red carpet I took quite seriously the first time because it was such a challenge as an actor but the second time I think I took it more seriously because it was more of a challenge as a person for me to play."
The first 'Basic Instinct' film, which starred Michael Douglas, caused a media sensation when it was first released in 1992 for it's confrontational sexual content and the now famous 'leg crossing' scene. The sequel has promised to be no less controversial.
Stone said she believes it's important to keep breaking taboos in film.
"Martha Graham said - you know who Martha Graham was, the dancer - she said as an artist, it's our job to push the edges of the envelope and to constantly remain in this sort of euphoric state of dissatisfaction," she said. "And I think she was right, I think it's our job to create to the edge so that people feel a sense of enthusiasm and excitement when they see new art and I believe in that," she explained.
As the new leading man, British actor David Morrissey plays a psychiatrist who is appointed to evaluate Tramell, but winds up as the target of her sexual manipulation and mind games.
Morrissey said what was set up in the first 'Basic Instinct' movie should only provide more suspense in the second.
"Well it's certainly the same character, so I think people who are familiar with the first film will certainly recognise Sharon's character, they know what she's like. And that's the joy actually I think for people watching it, is that the audience are ahead of my character so they know that-- they're screaming at the screen not to go anywhere near her because they know her better than I do but unfortunately I don't listen to the screams," he said.
