- Story Text: Paul Rudd stars in new comedy "Our Idiot Brother," and joined the co-stars of the film for its red carpet premiere in Hollywood on Tuesday (August 16). Elizabeth Banks, Rashida Jones, Zooey Deschanel and Rudd all attended the fete at the Arclight Cineramadome, as did comic actress Amy Poehler and actor Aidan Quinn.
The film stars Rudd as an optimistic but naive brother of three cynical sisters, and although they are more successful than he is and think they have the world figured out, his character, Ned, brings to them a much needed change of perspective. After a drug bust sends Ned to jail, he is forced to room with his sisters when let out of prison, and earnest and honest outlook on life makes life difficult for the women.
Rudd says that he enjoys an optimistic outlook, though about as half as much as his character in "Our Idiot Brother."
"I don't think my idealism is quite so far at the end of the spectrum that Ned, the character I'm playing is," says Rudd. "I probably maybe would be a '6,' hopefully on a good day a '7.' I think it is true probably, that if you try and give people the benefit of the doubt, more often then not they would want to rise to the occasion, but it doesn't work out as much as I would hope that it would."
Actress Zooey Deschanel says that Rudd was the perfect actor for the well-meaning Ned, because of his own disposition.
"Paul Rudd is just one of the sweetest human beings on the planet," says actress Zooey Deschanel. "So I think that inner-sweetness always shines through in his characters, but I think that in this film, he got to really let it come out full force."
Actress Rashida Jones, who has starred alongside Paul Rudd in three movies, playing his love interest in 2009's "I Love You, Man," got the chance to mix things up in "Our Idiot Brother." In this film, she plays the lesbian lover of Deschanel.
"I've never kissed a girl on-screen, so it was, they're very soft and nice, women," says Rashida, on kissing Zooey Deschanel in the film. "Men, straight men are lucky, because girls are really nice to kiss. And gay women are lucky."
"Our Idiot Brother" opens in theaters on August 26. The film also stars Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan, Hugh Dancy, and Adam Scott. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
