- Story Text: Sandra Bullock achieved her first No. 1 movie in 10 years when her latest romantic comedy "The Proposal" shot to the top of the US box office in its opening weekend in the USA.
The Walt Disney Co romantic comedy sold an estimated $34.1 million worth of tickets during the three-day period beginning June 19.
"The Proposal" also earned $10 million from 10 foreign markets, with No. 1 bows in Australia ($3.3 million) and Russia ($2.8 million) leading the way. Bullock last went to No. 1 in North America with the 1999 film "Forces of Nature," which co-starred Ben Affleck. Her previous best opening was $17.6 million for her most recent film, "Premonition," in March 2007.
All good news for director Anne Fletcher:
"You know I was very disappointed that we reached the number one spot in The States, but what are you gonna do...no...how do you answer that question, it was the greatest thing it's always so rewarding when you have success with something that you put your heart and soul in , everybody in it was so excited to be part of it , we had such a great time making it so it's really wonderful at the end of the day to have reached that and I'm hoping it does as well in the UK."
At the screening in London on July 2, Bullock joked why she felt the movie was so popular with audiences:
"People wanna see me taken down. They're tired of my good girl attitude, they wanna see me taken down and hurt and they get it and they wanna see Ryan naked and they get it. So what the public wants we give them and then of course we give them the cute little dog, cause every film that has a cute little dog, that's what the audience wants to see so every element we picked apart, what do audiences really love the most about films and we kind of piecemealed it into this movie and there's The proposal...and the wedding , albeit be it not a traditional wedding but all the elements in film that people love we gave them."
The 44-year-old actress stars as a book executive who fakes an engagement to her lowly assistant (Ryan Reynolds) to avoid deportation to her native Canada. The laughs ensue when she meets his parents, with "Golden Girls" veteran Betty White stealing the show.
Reynolds said he had never been at the receiving end of a nasty female boss yet, but didn't tolerate such behaviour anyway: "No, I've put up with a lot of horrible men but not a lot of horrible women." he added "You know what I don't tolerate that really, I kind of have a no assholes policy...oop can I say that ...beep me out....I think everybody should have a no assholes policy for the most part."
Reynolds and Bullock worked together well. The pair are old friends:
"Ryan and I have known each other for 9 years so we were a little worried that that sort of working environment, especially nude, would hurt the friendship but it didn't so I've known him for 9 years and the man i knew 9 years ago is the same man he is now and he just a good guy"
said Bullock.
Whilst doing the media run, Sandra Bullock also took the opportunity to clarify recent reports that she had applied for a German passport:
" No I said how lovely it would be if I could have my dual citizenship back because you loose it when you are of a certain age, I said how nice if that could happen in honour of my mother who passed and I know that was important to her so if it's something that could happen that would be amazing but I don't know what the laws are yet."
