- Story Text: Stars Jennifer Garner, Olivia Wilde, and Yara Shahadi arrived on the red carpet Sunday (November 06) for the Los Angeles premiere of their upcoming comedy "Butter."
The film, which also stars Hugh Jackman and Alicia Silverstone, is among the titles screening at this year's AFI Film Festival in Hollywood. Sunday's premiere was held at the historic Grauman's Chinese Theater.
Directed by Jim Field Smith, "Butter" is a comedy that takes takes a snapshot of life in the "middle America," where the battle over the coveted local butter carving title sets a path of dishonesty and deceit. The film takes on additional political overtones by skewing the ideas of the religious-right conservative movement and the morality they preach, but sometimes fail to live by.
"It was really the script itself that I fell for, it's always writing first," explained Jennifer Garner, who plays the role of Laura Pickler, a Sarah Palin-esque character in the film obsessed with winning the butter carving competition that her husband has won for several years.
"Jason Micallef, it was his first screenplay, he wrote it just on a drive across the country, had an idea and wrote it, and the character just grabbed me because she's kinda bad, and she's so different from things I've done before, and that's the fun of being an actor," said the actress.
Garner, who also carried the title of producer on the film, added that she really enjoys the opportunity to work on smaller projects.
"I kind of go back and forth because you do get to play different roles in an independent than you do in more mainstream movies," said Garner.
Newcomer Yara Shahadi plays Destiny, an orphan who competes for the coveted butter carving crown, enjoyed the experience of working on an independent film.
"I learned how to butter carve, I got to go to the Iowa State Fair and see professional butter carvers, I got to work with amazing people, and hmm.. I got to travel to Louisiana and Iowa, two places I hadn't been before," said Shahadi.
"Butter" is among the many films playing at the AFI Film Festival, which runs until November 10. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
