- Story Text: Robert Downey Jr. was all smiles with his wife Susan as they premiered "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" in Los Angeles on Tuesday (December 6). The couple, who are expecting their first child in February, worked together on the film. They joked about the experience.
"We love working together, we love Conan Doyle, we love this series, we love the cast and Guy and everybody. We had a good time," said Robert Downey, Jr.
Guy Ritchie, who also directed the first Sherlock Holmes blockbuster in 2009, said that taking on Sherlock Holmes is always a challenge.
"If Conan Doyle was around now, he'd be a screen play writer. It was by its very origin, Bond-esq in its scope. It was designed to be a big international movie so it just happened to come my way, I knew all the stories and we're off to the races," said Ritchie.
The film also features some high-octane action and fight scenes. Both Downey, Jr. and Ritchie are both martial arts fans. Downey Jr. joked that he could take his director in a fight.
"Well if we stayed on our feet he wouldn't have a chance. If he got me on the ground, which it would be difficult to allow, he'd probably tap me out," said Downey, Jr.
A new face to American films, Noomi Rapace was enjoying the spotlight. The Swedish actress, best known for her starring turn in the original film adaptations of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," picked up some new skills while researching her Gypsy character.
"I learned how to throw knives, I learned how to dance the old Gypsy dances and to sing and a little bit of the old Gypsy language Romanie, so I was doing a lot of research," said Rapace.
"Mad Men" star Jared Harris plays Professor Moriarty in this Holmes film. He said it's an honor to play a character that has had such an impact on literature and mystery.
"It's exciting, it's daunting, you know that this guy he really was the archetype for literary villains," said Harris. "He's the original one."
The film also stars Rachel McAdams, Jude Law and Stephen Fry. "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" opens in theaters in the U.S. on December 16. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
