It's a very hard conflict to understand and region to completely understand. And I think it's very hard to watch intentionally. It hopefully has enough of a dramatic sense to it where it's a film and you want to watch it and you enjoy the characters and you understand the characters and brings you through. But it's brutal, it shows brutality and it shows the sense - we hope, gives people an authentic feel to be inside of something that is uncomfortable." PITT AND JOLIE ON RED CARPET (SOUNDBITE) (English) ANGELINA JOLIE, WRITER AND DIRECTOR, SAYING: "Well, I learned so much of their personal stories and as artists I think I was very inspired because I'm an artist, I'm an actor and I have certain depth that I can pull from but it's very limited. These people, they're all actors and they are actors in a very different way from any actor I've ever met. They give everything they got because they survived war and they have a depth of emotion that is so beyond anything I can understand and they are so full of life and passion because of it. So, I think they are some of the greatest artists around today." JOLIE SPEAKING TO REPORTER (SOUNDBITE) (English) ANGELINA JOLIE, WRITER AND DIRECTOR, SAYING: "I don't know, I haven't decided on anything, you know, this one been - I haven't acted for a few years and I don't know, I'm not sure kind of who I am right now, am in flux, so we'll see." (SOUNDBITE) (English) ZANA MARJANOVIC, ACTRESS, SAYING: "First of all - it's such an authentic script and at the time when I was reading it, I didn't know that Angelina wrote it. I knew that she was to direct it, but I didn't know that she wrote it. And I felt it had to be a Bosnian that wrote it because there is such details and such a sensitive and beautiful moments in the dialogue that really seemed like someone who knows what they're talking about." (SOUNDBITE) (English) VANESA GLODJO, ACTRESS, SAYING: "I learned many, many things. She really knows how to behave in front of the camera. She knows what an actor suppose to do. She knows, she knows a lot of things and she helped me a lot, to reach emotions, to keep showing the same emotion, to stretch it." - Story Text: Angelina Jolie adds writer and director to her name with the release of the new film "In the Land of Blood and Honey." Jolie walked the red carpet with her long-time boyfriend Brad Pitt Monday night (December 5) in New York to celebrate the opening of the movie.
Set against the backdrop of the Bosnian War, the film tells the love story of a Serbian soldier and a Bosnian woman held captive in a camp that he overseas. On the red carpet Jolie described the film as complex.
"I think because it was a very hard brutal conflict. It's a very hard conflict to understand and region to completely understand. And I think it's very hard to watch intentionally. It hopefully has enough of a dramatic sense to it where it's a film and you want to watch it and you enjoy the characters and you understand the characters and brings you through. But it's brutal, it shows brutality and it shows the sense - we hope, gives people an authentic feel to be inside of something that is uncomfortable," Jolie told Reuters.
During shooting, inaccuracies about the plot of the movie caused protests from the Bosnian Women Victims of War association and forced Jolie's filming permit to be revoked. It was falsely reported that the film was about a Bosnian woman falling in love with her Serbian rapist. It wasn't until the actress presented her script to Bosnia's culture ministry that her permit was reinstated, and filming concluded.
The cast of the film is made up of local actors, something Jolie did purposely to ensue she told an accurate story. Jolie said working with the native actors was a true learning experience.
"They're all actors and they are actors in a very different way from any actor I've ever met. They give everything they got because they survived war and they have a depth of emotion that is so beyond anything I can understand and they are so full of life and passion because of it. So I think they are so of the greatest artist around today," explained Jolie.
However, each of the actors in the film said they learned a tremendous amount by working with the new director.
"She really knows how to behave in front of the camera. She knows what an actor suppose to do. She knows, she knows a lot of things and she helped me a lot, to reach emotions, to keep showing the same emotion, to stretch it," Vanesa Glodjo said.
When asked to rank Jolie on a scale of one to ten, actor Milos Timotijevic placed her off the charts: "Out of ten, 12."
As for what's next for the mother of six, Jolie has no direction.
"I haven't decided on anything, you know, this one been - I haven't acted for a few years and I don't know, I'm not sure kind of who I am right now, am in flux," said Jolie.
