But, it is familiar enough that it doesn't seem foreign. It is not "Downton Abbey," it's not "Deadwood," it is not so far in the past that you can not really relate to it. It is an interesting show, people bring a lot of their own baggage to it, and a lot of their own family history to it and their own experience to it. We have been incredibly lucky to be a part of it. It has been very, very fulfilling as an actor to be able to do this year in and year out and we are looking forward to another season." JOHN SLATTERY ON THE RED CARPET (SOUNDBITE) (English) JOHN SLATTERY ON GETTING BACK OT WORK ON THE SHOW AFTER LONG HIATUS, SAYING: "It took a scene or a couple of takes maybe. I was working with Elizabeth Moss the first day and we were both a little tight and nervous. But, it kind of comes back, it is a lot of walking, smoking, drinking and talking at the same time. It is not as easy as it looks." (SOUNDBITE) (English) JON HAMM ON THE SHOW'S SUCCESS SAYING: "Matt writes the best show he can and we try to pitch in and do what we can and we are very proud of this season and we think people are going to be surprised at a lot of things that happen. We are excited to have a two hour premiere. It's really cool." JANUARY JONES (SOUNDBITE) (English) JANUARY JONES ON FUTURE SEASONS, SAYING: "Oh, God, I don't know how he is going to age us but from what I know there is going to be two more after season five. Seven total, I think that is the plan but I don't know." JON HAMM GIVING MATTHEW WEINER A HUG (SOUNDBITE) (English) MATTHEW WEINER ON "MAD MEN" SAYING: "It offers something different than other kinds of entertainment. Right now especially, it's kind of time travel and part of it is kind of personal. The problems are very small, there are no big explosions, but people, we spend entire episodes about people having conversations and walking away and wishing we said something else." - Story Text: Dom Draper is back and so is the cast of the four-time Emmy and three-time Golden Globe award winning drama "Mad Men," after a 17-month hiatus.
Jon Hamm, John Slattery, January Jones and the rest of the stars of AMC's (American Movie Channel) hit show along with creator Matthew Weiner were all smiles as they arrived on the red carpet Wednesday night (March 14) for a two-hour premiere to kick off season five.
"Mad Men's" new season picks up the story of 1960s ad men in New York along with the cigarettes they chain-smoked, the booze they tossed down during working hours and, not least, the women they chased.
"It is a strange thing, it is set far enough in the past that people find it curious to look at. But, it is familiar enough that it doesn't seem foreign," explained star Jon Hamm, who plays the talented but flawed Dom Draper on the show.
"It is not 'Downton Abbey,' it's not 'Deadwood,' it is not so far in the past that you can not really relate to it. It is an interesting show, people bring a lot of their own baggage to it, and a lot of their own family history to it and their own experience to it. We have been incredibly lucky to be a part of it. It has been very, very fulfilling as an actor to be able to do this year in and year out and we are looking forward to another season."
Despite the long break, the cast explained that it was not that difficult getting familiar again with their roles.
"It took a scene or a couple of takes maybe," said John Slattery, who plays the less talented but witty Roger Sterling. "I was working with Elizabeth Moss the first day and we were both a little tight and nervous. But, it kind of comes back, it is a lot of walking, smoking, drinking and talking at the same time. It is not as easy as it looks."
The two-hour season premiere of "Mad Men" will air on Sunday, March 25 on the AMC cable network. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
