- Story Text: Members of the cast along with the director of "The Giant Mechanical Man" attended the world premier of the movie at the Tribeca Film festival on Monday (April 23).
Actress Jenna Fischer, who plays Janice, was accompanied by her husband Lee Kirk who wrote and directed the movie.
Fischer plays a woman in her 30s who is socially shy and learning to navigate adulthood. Kirk wrote the script specifically with Fischer in mind.
"It's pretty great to have the man who loves you write a role for you. I think that's like every actress' dream," said Fischer.
Chris Messina is Tim, the "Giant Mechanical Man" in the film's title. Tim is a street performer whose hours as a "living statue" don't pay the bills.
Tim and Janice end up landing seemingly dead-end jobs at the local zoo. Messina said he loved working with Fischer and Kirk and loved his character.
"I loved the writing and I related to the longing to kind of belong and fit in as a struggling actor. So I felt akin to him and always wanted to work with Jenna Fischer so I was really excited about that."
In the film, Malin Akerman plays Janice's overbearing younger sister Jill, who attempts to hook her up with an egotistical self-help guru, Doug, played by Topher Grace.
Akerman has two younger sisters and says that her character, Jill, behaves more like an older sister.
"She's trying to give her older sister advice, you know, trying to fix her life which is usually an older sister's position is just giving advice. But it was fun to play the younger, sort of annoying sister," laughed Akerman.
Topher Grace is convincing as the annoying Doug. He said he's always wanted to play a motivational speaker and had a lot of fun in the role.
"I went and begged Lee and Jenna, who were both producers on it - please let me play the bad guy. I think I have a take on these weird, motivational speakers," Grace told Reuters.
Fischer and Kirk worked on "The Giant Mechanical Man" for several years and they have a baby son. Fischer, who also plays receptionist Pam Beesley in the U.S. version of the television comedy series "The Office", says that once the show's season is over, she wants to spend more time with her son and she's certain she won't get bored.
"In fact now that the movie is premiering, and we won't have this project, I don't know what we're going to do. Luckily we just had a baby, so we'll work on that - that will be our next joint project," said Fischer.
