- Story Text: Even at 85, Tony Bennett says he is always trying to get better and a new documentary about his life called "The Zen of Bennett" profiles his eternal quest for perfection.
The intimate movie was filmed during the recording of the icon's album Duets II, which features some of the most respected voices of this era including Lady Gaga, the late Amy Winehouse, and Willie Nelson. Produced by his son Danny, who also doubles as his manager, the flick gives fans a glimpse behind the soothing voice that has entertained masses for the last six decades.
At the New York premiere Bennett was excited to see what his son has produced.
"I haven't seen it yet, so tonight is a very special night because I've heard so much about it and I can't wait to see what he created," Bennett told Reuters.
The 84 minute documentary was made over the course of three months. When asked what he learned about his father over the course of filming Danny joked: "Not to do another one of these."
But with all jokes aside, Danny said he is excited about the final product.
"We're very proud of it and it's absolutely a portrait of who he is today and for future generations," Danny said.
The jazz singer is almost as well known for his voice as he is his painting and was photographed in Australia last week painting the Sydney Opera House. Bennett said he paints every day and said today (April 23) he spent time organizing all his works from his Australia trip.
"I was just collecting all the things I did in Australia - we just got back from Australia and I was putting them all together to get them printed out so that they stay permanent. So I was busy all day today," he explained.
Appearances from the director of the film, Unjoo Moon, Harry Belafonte and Lady Gaga's parents Joseph and Cynthia Germanotta rounded out the celebrity attendees, as well as speedy appearances by Robert De Niro, the co-founders of the film festival.
