You have a huge responsibility to so many people and to yourself. It changes the relationship you have with that character, because before it was just pure fantasy. I just loved that character, honored that character and needed that character. Suddenly, I had to embodied that character for a generation of kids and I wanted so desperately to do it well and inspire kids to be better to each other and to themselves through doing that. Suddenly, it is like 'Oh, my God,' it is not just a fantasy anymore." - Story Text: After a whirl-wind, around-the-world publicity tour, "The Amazing Spider-Man" and its stars landed on the red carpet in Los Angeles for Thursday night's (June 28) premiere.
The marvel comic book super hero and box office titan is about to swing back onto the big screen as well, only this time it's The Social Network's Andrew Garfield in the lead role, not Tobey Maguire.
The talented young actor is well aware that there is a lot of pressure that comes with fitting into the Spider-Man tights.
"It has been a dream since I was 3-years-old and when it happens suddenly you have to do it," said Garfield, when asked about taking on the role.
"You have a huge responsibility to so many people and to yourself. It changes the relationship you have with that character, because before it was just pure fantasy. I just loved that character, honored that character and needed that character. Suddenly, I had to embodied that character for a generation of kids and I wanted so desperately to do it well and inspire kids to be better to each other and to themselves through doing that. Suddenly, it is like 'Oh, my God,' it is not just a fantasy anymore."
Spider-man quickly became one of the most popular and commercially successful superheroes after he first appeared as a fictional comic book hero in the early 1960s. Since then he has appeared in live-action television shows, syndicated newspaper comic strips, and a series of films directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire.
Also making her Spider-Man debut is The Help actress Emma Stone. She plays Spider-Man's love interest Gwen Stacy.
"One of the greatest things I think about in the character of Gwen, or our lady in this movie, is that she is Peter's equal in this movie," said Stone. "It is a first love that feels kind of palpable, it is so uncomfortable a lot of the time. So, hopefully girls want to see a valedictorian to his second in the class.
Director Marc Webb said he never had any doubts about his young stars.
"It was hard to find Andrew because he came in late in the process, when he came to the door it was a very quick decision. Emma, of course I was a fan forever and I knew all about her. When I saw them do their screen test it was magic. It made my job very easy," said Webb.
The sequel to Raimi's first three movies focuses on Peter Parker's quest to understand the disappearance of his parents, rather than the superhero dimension of the story.
The film, which is expected to play very strong with movie audiences overseas, arrived in Hollywood after holding nearly a dozen premieres at popular cities around the world, a trend that "Spider-Man" producer Matt Tolmach explained.
"Doing business overseas is kind of the great hope. It makes it all doable, so when you have one of these it that plays overseas, you chase it."
