- Story Text: Ethan Hawke never acted in a horror movie before, but that didn't stop the talented actor from jumping at the chance to star in the upcoming horror thriller "Sinister."
At the film's premiere Monday night (October 01) in Los Angeles, Hawke explained good scripts with strong character development are valued regardless of the genre.
"You know, whenever you get to meet a really serious filmmaker you can kind of tell in a about five minutes of talking to them," explained Hawke. "Scott was serious about making a good movie. When you have that, than you don't care what kind of genre it is. He taught me about why the genre was really subversive and a really interesting place to work."
Directed by Scott Derrickson, "Sinister" tells the story of a true crime novelist, played by Hawke, who discovers a box of mysterious, disturbing home movies that plunge his family into a nightmarish experience of supernatural horror.
"'The Exorcist,' 'The Omen,' 'Rosemary's Baby,' in 1980 'The Shining,' they were all very scary films and they were all movies with really characters and real relationships," said Derrickson. "To me if you can get an audience to invest in those real relationships, than the scary parts become far more scary."
The film also stars Vincent D'Onofrio and Juliet Rylance.
"Sinister" opens in theaters on October 12. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
