- Story Text: Three-time Oscar nominated actor Tom Cruise was in Tokyo on Wednesday (January 9) to promote his new film "Jack Reacher," which will be released next month as "Outlaw" in Japan The American movie star signed autographs for hundreds of screaming fans who jostled to get an autograph, picture or hug, which he obliged.
Cruise's action movie "Jack Reacher," which could be a new action movie franchise, features author Lee Child's former military investigator solving a fatal sniper attack.
Cruise was also a producer on the Paramount Pictures movie, released in the United States on December 21, but denied any ambitions to direct for now.
"I enjoy, I love movies and I enjoy producing them. It's just my love of cinema so I have no plans to direct," said Cruise.
At 5ft 7in (1.70 meter), Cruise is much slimmer and shorter than the 6ft 5in, 200 pound-plus (90.7 kg) character created by author Lee Child in the original books.
Cruise reflected on how he would evolve his craft as an actor now that he has hit 50.
"It's always a learning experience at any age. Whether I was 18, you just keep learning and applying the things that I learnt about story-telling and cinema and I'm enjoying it now probably even more - which is hard to say - then I have. I love making movies and entertaining people," Cruise said.
Cruise will continue on to Seoul, South Korea on his second leg of his Asia tour after Tokyo.
"There is no free time. We're promoting this movie, and then I go back to London to work on Tom's next movie and I'll rest when I'm dead," said director Christopher Mc Quarrie.
"Jack Reacher" is based on "One Shot" - one of the series of best-selling novels by Child about the eponymous former soldier turned drifter who travels the United States dealing out his own brand of justice.
British actress Rosamund Pike played the female lead.
"These guys taught me so much. I mean they really did. They are inspiring colleagues and I...um...I feel quite moved actually right now so I am going to shut up," said Pike In a separate news conference held earlier in the day, Cruise talked about his experience of acting the violent car chasing scenes he acted without a doubling stuntman.
"I ended up totalling eight cars. There's one car left, and I got that for my birthday," he said.
Director Christopher McQuarrie and British actress Rosamund Pike, who played the female lead, joined Cruise in the event.
