- Story Text: Stars of "Jack the Giant Slayer" arrived at its Los Angeles premiere on Tuesday (February 26). Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson and Bill Nighy talked about what it was like working on a new take of old fairytale, "Jack and the Beanstalk."
"In the fairytale there's only one giant, in this one there's a whole gang of giants," said the film's star, Hoult. "In the fairytale, Jack goes up there to steal from the giant, whereas in this one he goes up there to rescue the princess instead, which is a more noble deed."
Taking full advantage of the larger-than-life subject matter, the film is a giant adventure filled with many evil giants out to wreak havoc on humanity. A long-standing peace between humans and giants is threatened when a young farmer tries to rescue a princess who has been kidnapped and taken to the giants' kingdom. The princess in need of rescuing from the big beanstalk is looking for an adventure of her own.
"You've got a princess who is feisty and you've got a farm hand who becomes the hero in the end," said Tomlinson, who plays the princess. "Usually it's the guys in the armor who are doing the rescuing. It was a fantastic story with a brilliant twist, revamped with all the CGI; it's amazing to see what they can do with fairytales now."
Nighy plays the leader of the giants, and talked about what it was like getting his voice ready to sound ominous.
"I'll get down on the floor in the back of the car and just scream high and yell low into the carpet in the back of the car," he said. "And you should do it, if anybody wants to try it; I don't suppose they do, do it the day before, because it pays off the next morning. (Nighy's voice gets hoarse) 'You wake up and you're like this,' which is quite cool."
The 63-year-old English actor and comedian also talked about the fun he had on set with his castmates while wearing a motion capture suit and filming in front of a green screen.
"You're wearing silly, technological clothing, which I don't understand," said Nighy. "At my time in life, it's a crash course in humility. You have to be careful not to catch the eye of your fellow giants because it's very funny and it got to be an occupational hazard. It's difficult to take yourself seriously as a 22-foot tall creature."
