- Story Text: The Hollywood premiere for "Step Up Revolution" started with style as more than a dozen dancers hit the red carpet in a surprise performance that brought screaming fans to their feet Tuesday night (July 17) at the famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre.
Stars Ryan Guzman and Kathryn McCormick soon followed along with the rest of the cast for the dance film that is the latest installment in the hit franchise.
"Step Up Revolution," the 4th film in the series, is set against the vibrant backdrop of Miami. Emily (Kathryn McCormick) arrives in Miami with aspirations of becoming a professional dancer and soon falls in love with Sean (Ryan Guzman), a young man who leads a dance crew in elaborate, cutting-edge flash mobs, called "The Mob." When a wealthy business man threatens to develop The Mob's historic neighborhood and displace thousands of people, Emily must band together with Sean and The Mob to turn their performance art into protest art, and risk losing their dreams to fight for a greater cause.
Guzman, who had no prior dance training prior to taking on the role, also acknowledged the inevitable comparisons to Channing Tatum, who starred in the first film.
"Well you kind of know once you take this role on that you are going to get comparisons and fill in Channing Tatum's shoes, which are very big shoes," explained Guzman. "I wanted to make a name for myself and I trained really hard, three weeks, nine hours every single day. I got all the combos down and gave my all to this movie and it shows."
Co-star Kathryn McCormick, of "So You Think You Can Dance" fame, believes the movie offers something for everyone.
"They are entertaining and they are so relevant for today and where dance is going," said McCormick, about the "Step Up" franchise.
"To have a film that is relatable and so inviting to so many audiences. To children it is so motivating and for people to have the courage to do what Sean and Emily. For older people, who dance their whole lives, it is a chance to be able to relive their dreams."
Guzman added that the latest film may be the best yet.
"It has it's own feel, even though it is part of the "Step Up" franchise. We do flash mobs and it just gives a little bit more. I think it showcases dance a little bit more. We are bringing back that story line that you loved in "Step Up" one, with Channing and Jenna, we are getting you to invest in the characters," said Guzman.
