- Story Text: Tom Cruise turned up complete with a portable heater following his every move to cope with the chilly London weather at the premiere for his new movie "Oblivion."
Cruise goes into sci-fi mode for this film about the last two remaining humans on Earth trying to maintain the defence of water supplies from a mysterious alien species. He plays the adventurous field agent Jack Harper who braves a post-apocalyptic landscape to repair the drones which defend the water, and he is supervised by his long-time lover Vicka (Andrea Riseborough).
Things begin to unravel when a mysterious space craft crash lands nearby and they discover a survivor Julia (Olga Kurylenko) who appears to know Jack and also appears in Jack's dreams.
The film has been shot for IMAX, and can be brutal in its detail during extreme close-ups.
When Cruise was asked by a journalist at the premiere how he pulled off looking so youthful at 50 especially under such high-definition scrutiny, he replied "You know, working... I just work and I'm an actor so I've got to train and I'm an athlete and the kind of characters and films and... just making a movie you've got to be fit and I've just trained my whole life. It's nothing special. I don't know how. I don't sleep much either, but thank you for saying that, thank you."
Although the film features many special effects, most of the film was shot on location and not against a green screen, which may account for its estimated $120 million (US dollars) budget.
When the idea of creating most of the futuristic sets was put to the studio, Tom explained that there were issues.
"Look, of course, the studio said 'are you sure this is going to work? This is costing a lot of money' and we were like 'yeah yeah yeah it's going to work it's going to work' and we were like 'holy shit I hope this works' but it did," he said.
Being a science fiction movie, Cruise was also asked what he thought was the most out-of-this-world thing about him.
He answered: "I think you might answer that, I don't know. To me, I feel it's yourself. I'm pretty normal, I love movies and hang out with my family and feel lucky enough to do something I love to do which is entertain audiences."
