- Story Text: Hollywood star Mark Wahlberg patiently met with his fans that were lined up on Hollywood Blvd. Monday night (April 22), before heading over to the red carpet for the premiere of his new film, the dark comedy, "Pain & Gain."
The actor, who started his film career as an action hero, tough guy, has also proved adept in comedies and hopes to find success with his latest role, that finds him paired up with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
Directed by Michael Bay, of "Transformers" fame, "Pain & Gain," is based on a true story starring Wahlberg, Johnson and Anthony Mackie. The trio play a group of personal trainers in 1990s Miami who, in pursuit of the American Dream, get caught up in a criminal enterprise that goes horribly wrong.
"I never really looked at it as a comedy," said Wahlberg. "I just thought there was so many outrageous things happening you couldn't help but laugh at certain places, which I thought would make it for a more interesting balance. Because of the drama and the suspense of the film, layered that with the comedy and the action, it was just so original."
Bay, who has Wahlberg signed on to star in his revamped "Transformers" franchise, believes the actor was perfect for "Pain & Gain."
"He doesn't try to be funny," explained Bay. "He is just so believable in the role. His earnest is what makes it funny. This is not just go out and make a bunch of jokes, this is like true events that happened in this crime. But, they were so stupid, the criminals were so stupid, that it was funny. Not funny in any way for the victims, because it is very serious, just the absurdity of the case."
The film also stars Ed Harris, Rebel Wilson and Tony Shalhoub.
