- Story Text: "Old pals" Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson met up on the red carpet Wednesday night (May 29) in Los Angeles for the premiere of "The Internship."
The film, reunites the actors - they starred together in "The Wedding Crashers" and "Starsky & Hutch" - as Billy (Vaughn) and Nick (Wilson), salesmen whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital world. Trying to prove they are not obsolete, they defy the odds by talking their way into a coveted internship at Google, along with a battalion of brilliant college students. But, gaining entrance to this utopia is only half the battle. Now they must compete with a group of the nation's most elite, tech-savvy geniuses to prove that necessity really is the mother of re-invention.
The Internet giant's involvement in the film, has at the very least, created an interesting pre-release "buzz." Amidst the comedic hijinks, the film delivers a picture of a kind and gentle Google, a company that offers free food and exercise classes and is in every respect the place you'd like to work. At the same time, it's bucolic campus provides an ample canvas to create some laughs.
"The movie is not about the goings on of Google," explained Vaughn, who came up with the idea for the film after seeing a "60 Minutes" special that portrayed Google as one of the best places in the world to work.
"It is really about guys that are in a tough spot and dreaming to try and do something that feels viable again. So, it became the perfect backdrop. But, the movie is really about the kids involved and all the personal stuff they are going through. Google is just a really fun and exciting world to play out the relatable thing of trying to find something else to do in life and change."
Vaughn arranged a lunch with Wilson and a group of "Googlers" at the company's Mountain View campus, and sought the company's participation and Google eventually agreed.
The movie though is a far cry from the Hollywood experience of rival Facebook. The social networking kingpin did not collaborate with "The Social Network," which focused heavily on the conflicts between founder Mark Zuckerberg and his early partners and didn't make any of them look very good.
"They thought the notion of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as interns, very age inappropriate interns at the company, was funny," said Shawn Levy, director of "The Internship." "We made clear right out of the gate that we had to have autonomy over the story and that it might be R-rated. They were like, 'Just make it funny, make it warm-hearted and not kind of mean.'"
Besides, the film's uplifting message, this is still a comedy about Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.
"When Vince kind of called me and had the idea and we kind of visited Google, it just seemed like, aside from the idea, it was just fun hanging around, just fun kind of being together, trying to come up with funny stuff," said Wilson. "So, yeah, it was nice to be back together working on something."
The film also stars Rose Byrne and John Goodman.
