- Story Text: Creator Aaron Sorkin joined the cast of his acclaimed HBO drama, "The Newsroom" on the red carpet Wednesday night (July 10) in Hollywood for the series' Season 2 premiere.
"The Newsroom" features an eclectic cast that centers on cable news anchor "Will McAvoy," played by Jeff Daniels, his executive producer (Emily Mortimer), his newsroom staff (John Gallagher, Jr., Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Dev Patel, Olivia Munn) and their boss (Sam Waterston). As season 2 opens, it's a year later, and in the days leading up to election night 2012, the "News Night" staff is being prepared to give depositions in a lawsuit - the circumstances of which unfold throughout the season. A mysterious tip has led to the airing of a story with consequences no one could have anticipated.
Sorkin, an Oscar and Emmy-winning writer, explained that the series was never meant to be a "how-to" manual on news gathering and was reluctant to weigh-in on the role of media.
"It's certainly the way I feel when people make or have a sentence that begins with the word 'Hollywood,' as if it is a monolith and that we all think with one mind," said Sorkin.
"There is a ton of different media and some of it is great and some of it is less than great. And that is how I feel about it."
The force behind "The West Wing" and "The Social Network" added though that it is unfair to blame the press for sometimes being biased in their coverage.
"Of course, it would be great if all news was PBS and you didn't have to worry about ratings and not have to worry about advertisers," explained Sorkin. "That is not the way it is, it is a market economy and they have to answer to the same master as everyone else. So, you have to work with that."
Daniels believes "The Newroom's" fictitious "News Night" telecast though is one that has its intentions in the right place.
"I think there are shows out there that are trying to do - and successfully do - what Will is trying to do, sometimes successfully, and that is to tell the truth," said Daniels. "'Tell us what we need to know, you're the guy we come too, you're the guy, out of all the ones that are on TV, you're the one I come to tell me what is really going on.'"
