- Story Text: Jeremy Lin hit the red carpet for the premiere of documentary "Linsanity" in Los Angeles on Thursday (Sept. 19).
The film chronicles the 25-year-old basketball player's rise from obscurity to sublime winner and highlights when Lin played for the New York Knicks in February 2012. Lin, the first Taiwanese-American to play in the NBA, captivated the country in that month of victories.
The "Linsanity" may have faded since his knee injury last year and his move from the Knicks to the Houston Rockets. Although his first season with the Rockets was not as great as he had expected, Lin said it was all about changing his mindset for the next season.
"What am I going to get my fulfillment or satisfaction from?" Lin told Reuters on the red carpet. "I think if I go into it thinking, 'I'm going to give it my best effort, it's going to be an act of worship and I'll be able to surrender the results to God,' then I think in that sense I'll have purpose. But it's when I worry too much about the result or worry too much about what other people, or trying to fulfill the expectations that other people set for me."
Lin said he was aware of all the buzz he created during his time with the Knicks, but was just trying to focus on playing the game.
"I had been on the bench for a while so I was just trying to play with all my heart," he said. "I was just trying to play into the Lord. I was trying to have as much fun as I could doing it."
The point guard from Harvard, an elite college better known as a springboard to the U.S. presidency than to basketball success, galvanized the struggling Knicks team and launched a craze dubbed "Linsanity" by the tabloids.
Undrafted and cut by two other teams before signing with the Knicks, Lin got his chance because of injuries and previously admitted he was overwhelmed by all the attention. A groin strain to Carmelo Anthony and a leave granted to Amar'e Stoudemire after his brother was killed in a car crash, left the Knicks shorthanded and coach Mike D'Antoni decided to give Lin a look on the court. With Lin in action, the Knicks came alive.
"He was so good about how he handled all the attention, how he handled stardom, because he went from nobody sleeping on a couch to stardom and it wasn't two weeks," said D'Antoni. "He handled it perfectly."
Using his cross-over dribble, court vision, passing skills and ability to drive to the hoop, the young guard was able to get his team mates involved and thrill the crowds.
