- Story Text: Martin Freeman, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans and Benedict Cumberbatch were among the cast attending the European premiere of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" in Berlin on Monday night (December 09).
The second part of director Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" franchise had its world premiere in Los Angeles last week (December 02).
"This whole experience has been an extraordinary thing," said Andy Serkis, Second Unit director and the actor playing "Gollum."
"I mean, I thought I was only coming back to the role of Gollum. We shot for 200 days, shot amazing - I was in the fortunate position to shoot amazing sequences with all of the cast. We had a great time," said Serkis.
The film follows the further adventures of hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), the thirteen dwarfs and the wizard Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen) in Middle Earth. The group continues on their quest to regain the gold captured by the dragon, Smaug.
Evangeline Lilly plays the elf warrior Tauriel. Unlike most of the other characters, Tauriel isn't part of any Tolkien work but has been imagined by Jackson and his wife Frances Walsh, and appears to play a major part alongside Orlando Bloom's Legolas.
Luke Evans, who plays Bard the Bowman, said I am very happy to be in Berlin doing this. It's one of those cities, they really know how to put on a premiere and it's so great to be here for the European premiere."
The first film of the trilogy, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," made more than $1 billion dollars (USD) worldwide.
