- Story Text: Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley and Kenneth Branagh hit the red carpet for the premiere of "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit."
Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley and Kenneth Branagh walked the red carpet for the premiere of CIA thriller "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" in Los Angeles on Wednesday (January 15).
"Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," based on the titular character created by author Tom Clancy in "The Hunt for Red October," follows Ryan (Chris Pine) as he begins his career with the United States' Central Intelligence Agency under a supervising officer played by Kevin Costner.
"For sure Chris has pulled his end of it off, they picked a good Jack Ryan," said Costner. "Spy movies, there are always going to be a place for them in Hollywood, same as Westerns, there's just going to be a place for them and love stories and comedies, it's what we do, and the better we do them, the better it is for people who like to sit in the dark."
Pine is the fourth actor to portray that character created by author Tom Clancy, who died at the age of 66 in October.
"I had a big fight with a guy that's a lot bigger than I am so the whole time I was thinking, 'please don't die,'" said Pine, on filming his scariest stunt in the movie. "I broke my finger doing that so I wasn't totally lucky but I have a lot of fun doing that stuff."
Clancy first introduced readers to Ryan in 1984 novel "The Hunt for Red October." Alec Baldwin played the CIA analyst in the 1990 movie adaptation, followed by Harrison Ford playing Ryan in "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger," while Ben Affleck portrayed the government hero in 2002's "Sum of All Fears."
This time Pine steps in Ryan's shoes to work in Moscow, where he uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack.
Kenneth Branagh directed the movie and stars as the main villain.
"People found me so scary as the villain that they were very wary of me as the director, so the set was more quiet than usual, and i think people listened to me more than they might otherwise do," Branagh said. "If you're trying to get people to do what you want, playing a very dangerous, scary man is maybe a good way to do it."
Keira Knightley plays Pine's love interest, who gets in on the undercover action, too.
"My character loves him because they're about to get married and it would be a real bummer if she didn't love him at that point," said Knightley. "If you're a CIA agent you're not allowed to tell anyone unless they're immediate family so your girlfriend doesn't count, so he's desperately pushing for them to get married so he can tell her and she's going 'I don't want to get married to you because there's a secret and I don't know what the secret is.'"
