- Story Text: The cast of the film "Cesar Chez" celebrated the story of the famed civil rights leader at a red carpet premiere in Los Angeles on Thursday evening (March 20) For actor and director Diego Luna, it was important to make a call out to filmmakers in an effort to shine a light on the struggles and success of Latinos.
"A message for those who make films in this country, they have to make stories about us, they have to celebrate our experience, they have to celebrate our heroes," explained Luna. "We did it, it took us four years that's why you see me with this smile like an idiot because I can't stop thinking what it took us to get here," said Luna with excitement.
Actress America Ferrara, who plays Helen, the wife of Chavez, the film was a lesson.
"I had never heard the name of Helen Chavez before," said Ferrara, "diving into this role and learning who she was so inspiring. She wasn't just Cesar's wife and the mother to his kids, she ran the credit union, she protested, she got arrested, she was a pivotal part in forming the union and I'm so grateful that the story of this women is being told at the same time."
"Cesar Chavez" details the life and times of the iconic activist, focusing on his duties as a husband and father coupled with his commitment to bringing dignity and justice to others. It highlights Chavez embracing non-violence as he battled greed and prejudice in his struggle for the rights of farm workers. The film celebrates his triumphant journey and is a remarkable testament to the power of one individual's ability to change the system.
"I want the Latinos and my Mexican people to actually really be proud of it," said Michael Pena, who plays Chavez in the film. "I then want anyone else to be entertained by it and I've been blessed and I've been fortunate with being able to do this and I really want them to enjoy it, I did it for them so."
