- Story Text: Hard work, great writers and a fun atmosphere on set - the stars from HBO's "Veep" agree that's the show's secret to success as they hit the red carpet for the show's 3rd season premiere.
"Veep" follows U.S. Vice President Selina Meyer, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and her staff as they engage in typical office politics, set against the backdrop of the second highest political office in the country.
The show's creator and executive producer Armando Iannucci, who's produced well known TV series in the U.K., such as "The Thick of It," credited the writers and the cast for doing a phenomenal job in making the show what it is.
"I mean we work really hard, and we have writers, you know, we write and rewrite and rewrite, you know the scripts go through sometimes twenty, thirty drafts, and then the cast are so on all the time. You know the way we shoot it, everyone is radio miced, the cameras are all following them around, there's no marks, so they're not saving their performance up for their one big close up, so they have to perform all the time because we can see them. So it's just a hyper atmosphere," Iannucci said.
His thoughts were echoed by star and producer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who also complemented the writers and the cast.
"Exceptionally gifted writers and an exceptionally gifted cast, and you put it all together and you got a shot. Doesn't mean it'll work all the time but if you can get those three pieces into place it helps," Louis-Dreyfus said.
For the first two seasons of "Veep," one of the main themes was the vice president's frustration over holding such a high office that technically doesn't have very much power. But in season three, she will be taking a run at the Oval Office since it was announced at the end of season two that the sitting president would not be seeking a second term.
Actor Matt Walsh explained that this new twist in the story line will allow the show to delve into a number of controversial political topics.
"Season 3 is all about Selina Meyer's campaign for president so we touch on the abortion issue, we go into the gun lobby, deal with them, we go to Silicon Valley for some billionaires, get some money. She's gotta do it safely so she's not in trouble for campaigning," Walsh said.
The first episode of Season 3 of "Veep" will air on HBO in the U.S. on April 6. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
