- Story Text: Two of Hollywood's biggest names have teamed up for the latest action-thriller from tinseltown, "Conspiracy Theory".
Mel Gibson, in the role of a disturbed New York City cab driver and co-star Julia Roberts, led the celebrity count at the film's world premiere in Los Angeles.
Gibson plays a cabbie, Jerry Fletcher, whose belief in various government conspiracies lands him in hot water.
Fletcher is a man who lives in fear of a past he can't remember. He spends his time driving his cab, talking compulsively about the conspiracies he thinks lurk behind everything.
But somewhere in his memory are flashes of recollection so frightening and real that he's certain he's not imagining things.
Fletcher believes the only person who can help him solve his mysteries is a Justice Department attorney named Alice Sutton, played by Julia Roberts.
She barely can tolerate him.
Her disbelief in Jerry's theories is tested when Jerry is abducted by a government psychiatrist, Dr Jonas, played by Patrick Stewart, of Star Trek fame.
Jonas uses some "unconventional" medical means to find out what's hidden in Jerry's memory.
After Fletcher escapes him, Alice feels compelled to listen to him. The unlikely pair suddenly find themselves in a desperate flight for their lives.
In the process, they discover the truth about an event that reveals secrets both of them must understand.
"Conspiracy Theory" is directed by by Richard Donner and produced by action film master Joel Silver.
Both men worked together with Gibson previously on the "Lethal Weapon" series.
They also collaborated on "Assassins" with Sylvester Stallone.
Donner's other credits include "Maverick," also with Gibson, "Superman" and the hit thriller "The Omen." The filmmakers were challenged by staging several complex action sequences in the middle of busy New York City.
In the city's famed Times Square, they had to light 10 blocks, shut down four and flood the square with water. They also closed the Queensboro Bridge for seven hours to stage a sequence with Gibson and Roberts as they eluded federal operatives.
That sequence alone required more than 50 stunt cars, six cameras and two helicopters.
"Conspiracy Theory" opens throughout the United States on August 8 and in Britain on August 29. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
