- Story Text: "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" may have held numerous press events around the globe to date, but it was London which was chosen for the movie's world premiere.
On Thursday (April 10), the actor beneath the famous red suit, Andrew Garfield, arrived on a bus with a group of children, who are part of the project Kids City which creates out of school activities for young people. Garfield also visited one of the centres on April 8 in full Spider-Man outfit.
Earlier in the press tour, co-star Jamie Foxx and Garfield also attended the launch of Earth Day in Singapore.
Speaking on the red carpet, Garfield said "So for this press tour, what we're trying to do is we're trying to take the responsibility of Spider-Man and the ethos and the energy of Spider-Man and have it break through just being a movie and turn it into real life. How do we take Spider-Man into real life?"
Although for Foxx, who plays the super-villain Electro in the movie, the press tour had been a very different experience.
"It's a great tour because I got a chance to bring my daughter, to bring my family. We went to China, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and that's the great part about because you can go to all around the world and then see kids who are 2, 3, 4, 5 years old with Spider-Man costumes on and then you come here and this is pretty incredible," he said.
The movie sees Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, loving life as a superhero. However, a freak accident at the sinister Oscorp suddenly turns meek worker Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx) into the super-powered Electro, who unleashes his anger on New York City and Spider-Man finds himself a new enemy.
Aside from the action, Peter is trying to keep his relationship with girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) under control and starts rekindling an old friendship with Harry Osborn, who comic book readers know will eventually become the Green Goblin.
Security has been tight around the film as there have been concerns that a scene in the movie turns the new franchise on its head.
The film is directed by Marc Webb who is understandably concerned by people spreading spoilers.
"It's tricky because you want to protect the experience for everybody, you want that moment when people go into the cinema and the lights go down to be sacred but you also want people to hear about the movie and talk about the movie but when people see the movie, hopefully they'll keep what needs to be private private, we'll see," he said.
Garfield also weighed in on the argument saying "I mean in this day and age it's so hard because for some reason we all want to know stuff before it happens. I don't really understand that. When I saw 'The Sixth Sense', I didn't know that Bruce Willis was in fact dead and I thought that was rather... sorry. I just ruined it for people who haven't seen 'The Sixth Sense'. See? I've already messed things up. That's the problem. I wish that people could just go to the movie and just watch the story unfold. That's how I like going to the movies."
The premiere saw Garfield's co-star and girlfriend Emma Stone pose together for pictures. However, when speaking to reporters Stone kept tight-lipped about her boyfriend.
"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is being released from April 16 in Europe and will eventually hit cinemas in North America a few weeks later on May 2. A similar release technique was used for the 'Captain America' sequel where the US were one of the last territories to see the film.
Explaining why movies are now being released in this manner, the film's producer Matthew Tolmach, said "Why should all movies open first in America? There really isn't a reason. It's good to get word of mouth coming in from across the globe. It's a great model and it makes it exciting for a lot of other territories and that's the reason. These movies have become international, the business has. It's a very different day than it used to be." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
