- Story Text: The same week John Travolta is busy publicizing his new film, "Primary Colors", one of his classics is coming back for another run.
Two decades after it became a worldwide hit, "Grease" is again the word in Hollywood.
The film is celebrating its twentieth anniversary with a re-release in cinemas across the United States.
Its co-stars, Australian singer Olivia Newton-John and Stockard Channing, grooved down the red carpet at Mann's Chinese Theatre this week (March 15) for the film's second Hollywood premiere.
Director Randal Kleiser also was there to see the digitally-enhanced version win another generation of fans.
Travolta and Newton-John play Danny and Sandy, a young couple whose perfect summer romance gets complicated when they both end up at Rydell High School for their senior year.
Danny is returning to his cool, leather-jacketed image as the leader of the "T-Birds," consisting of the coolest guys in school.
Meanwhile, Sandy is introduced to the "Pink Ladies," the "T-Birds'" female counterparts.
The leader of this group is the tough-talking Rizzo, played by Stockard Channing, while Didi Conn plays another member of the group, Frenchy.
"Grease" was based on the long-running hit Broadway musical of the same name.
The Broadway show started its long run in 1972 and racked up nearly 2200 performances, passing "Oklahoma" as the eighth-longist production in Broadway history.
The show has gone on to become an American classic as well as an international smash. It also spawned a Fifties revival which produced films like "American Graffiti" and television shows like "Happy Days." The musical and later the film version made memorable such songs as "You're the One That I Want," "Summer Lovin'," "Greased Lightning" and "Hopelessly Devoted To You." Twenty years later, we'll be singing those songs again.
"Grease" re-opens throughout the United States on March 27. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
