- Story Text: Stars of a hit Japanese film kicked off a two-day promotional tour in Manila on Wednesday (August 6) for its Asian movie premiere in the Philippines.
Cast members of Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno, a live action adaptation of a popular Japanese manga comic by director Keishi Ohtomo, greeted hundreds of Filipino fans at a mall in the Philippine capital.
Fans screamed and took photos of lead actors Takeru Sato, Emi Takei and Muneta Aoki as they waved at the crowd. Some shook hands with the stars and had their posters signed.
"After all those years, they were able to make the movie and it was premiered here first in the Philippines, and the stars even went here from Japan. We've been in Japan, but we weren't able to see them. It's really amazing because I really love the story," said Pauline Labarda, a long-time fan of the series.
Miguel Mercado, another avid fan who has watched Ohtomo's first installment of the Rorouni Kenshin series of movies and read the Japanese comic, was thrilled to see the actors in person.
"I wish I met them, but seeing them up on stage is amazing because I really enjoyed the first film so much, I thought everyone did a really great job in portraying the characters that we all love," he said.
Rurouni Kenshin, also known as Samurai X in other countries, tells the story of Kenshin Himura, a former assassin who became a wanderer to seek redemption of his past sins.
Ohtomo's second movie adaptation of the early 90s comic follows a popular arc in the series where Kenshin fights against a fellow assassin bent on overthrowing the Japanese government.
The movie was split into two parts: the first half "Kyoto Inferno" released in August, and "The Legend Ends" which will be shown in September.
The Philippines has a large following of Japanese animation subculture, with comic conventions and costume play competitions being held regularly. Japanese cartoons are regularly aired on local television programmes and translated into the local language. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
