- Story Text: U.S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Secretary
of Defense William Cohen met with North Korean Vice Marshal Jo
Myong-rok Wednesday for a second day of intensive and detailed
talks.
Vice Marshal Jo Myong-rok, deputy to North Korean
leader Kim Jong-il, came to the State Department for meetings
with U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and with
Ambassador Wendy Sherman, coordinator of U.S. policy toward
one of the world's few remaining communist countries.
Jo was again in a grey suit, as he had been when he met
with Albright on the previous day, instead of the full
military uniform he wore at the White House on Tuesday.
U.S. officials hope his three-day visit will promote
reconciliation between Pyongyang and Seoul following the
historic summit in June between Kim Jong-il and South Korean
President Kim Dae-jung.
Washington also hopes to make progress toward persuading
North Korea to declare a permanent halt to its ballistic
missiles program and to work its way off a U.S. list of "state
sponsors of terrorism."
After lunch at the State Department, Jo went to
the Pentagon for a meeting with Defense Secretary William
Cohen. Jo hosts a dinner on Wednesday evening and leaves on
Thursday.
