- Story Text: U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan has arrived in Jordan to
hold talks with King Abdullah and senior officials on the
latest Middle East peace talks as part of a regional tour in
the area. Speaking to the media Annan praised the role of
Jordanian troops in Sierra Leone.
Meanwhile, members of the National Mobalization
Committee for the Defence of Iraq staged a rallly outside UN
headquarters in Amman calling on Annan to lift sanctions
imposed on Iraq since the early 1990.
Annan was received by Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdul
Illah al-Khatib at Marka Airport on Tuesday (June 20) before
proceeding to the Foreign ministry building in Amman.
Speaking to the media, Annan praised the Jordanian
contingent of over 2,000 troops, that ranks among the top four
contributors to the U.N. effort to restore order in the
African state.
"The U.N could not have mounted that operation in Sierra
Leone without the support of the Jordanian government, his
majesty the king and the army on the ground. They are working
extremely well with the Indian contingent, with the contingent
from the west African region - from Nigeria to Ghana- and they
are playing a very, very effective role," said Annan.
Diplomats said the U.N. had approached Jordan to raise
its forces to bolster a force of nearly 13,000 by an extra
3,500 at least.
Officials say King Abdullah is enthusiastic about
bolstering his country's involvement as the kingdom seeks to
earn a reputation as a major contributor to U.N. peacekeeping
operations. Jordanian troops are already active in similar
U.N. efforts in the Balkans and East Timor.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdull Illah al-Khatib in
turn stressed the need to lift sanctions imposed on Iraq
following its invasion of Kuwait in 1990.
"It's well-known that Jordan is suffering economically
from the sanctions imposed on Iraq. Iraqi people pay the
price for the sanctions and we asked the U.N to lift the
suffering of the Iraqi people."
Also on Tuesday, members of the National Mobilisation
Committee for the Defence of Iraq staged a peaceful rally in
front of the UN headquaters in Amman.
Protesters carrying anti-sanction banners appealed to
the U.N. General Secretary to lift the sanctions placed on
Iraq since 1990.
Protester Aida Dabas called the sanctions a crime
against humanity committed by an organisation that is supposed
to protect human rights and not damage them.
Annan is expected to leave Jordan on Wednesday (June 21)
to Israel as part of a Middle East tour that has so far taken
him to Egypt and Lebanon and will also cover Syria.
