- Story Text: United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has called
for a 10 billion U.S. dollar global fund to tackle AIDS, and
former United States President Bill Clinton has said the U.S.
could easily meet its contribution.
Annan called for the world's financial support in the
struggle against HIV/AIDS on Thursday (April 26) at the start
of a two-day summit on Africa's AIDS epidemic.
"At a minimum we need to be able to spend an additional
seven to ten million dollars on the struggle against HIV/AIDS
in the world as a whole over an extended period of time," he said.
Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo hosted Libyan leader
Muammar Gadaffi, former U.S. President Bill Clinton and around
a score of African presidents and heads of government.
Clinton was amongst the first to throw his support behind
Annan's intention to start a global AIDS fund by saying that
the United States could easily contribute.
"Oh we have the money all right, the question is whether
we have the will," he said.
The summit ends on Friday when the leaders are due to sign
a resolution.
AIDS is now the number one killer in Africa and it
threatens to slash the continent's potential for economic
growth. It has claimed 18.8 million lives worldwide since the
epidemic started.
Africa is hardest hit by the disease, home of more than 70
percent of the world's 36 million people infected by HIV, the
virus that causes AIDS.
