(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) AMR MOUSSA SAYING "This Road Map was presented to the Palestinians by the Arab side, so if the Palestinian side agrees to it then I do not see the need to over step the Palestinian decision. It is only up to the Palestinians to accept it, so if the Palestinians accept it and the Israelis reject it, then we must take a clear stance. It is not for any other side to accept it apart from the Palestinians, so I do not see the need or obligation to reject an agreement that has been accepted by the Palestinians. Right now, it is Israel that is fighting against the Road Map. So let us be cautious and in the end we cannot know what is best for the Palestinians more than the Palestinians themselves. 1.35 4. - Story Text: Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa has pledged
the league's support of the Palestinian Authority's decision
to accept the proposed Middle East peace Road Map.
Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa supported the
Palestinian decision on Thursday (May 22, 2003) to accept the
Road Map and noted that it was not up to the members of the Arab
League to accept or reject it but rather to support the
Palestinian decision.
Moussa was speaking to reporters after meeting with
Lebanese Foreign Minister Jean Obeid at the Foreign Ministry.
Moussa also told reporters that it is in the interest of
all Arab countries to support the Arab League as a legitimate
and strong political and economic body, adding that garnering
more support for the league would be part of his mission.
Moussa also denied any tension between the Arab league
and any of the member countries. The response came as a
reporter asked whether relations between the league and Kuwait
were tense at the moment.
Commenting on the proposed Road Map, Moussa said the
proposal was not the means of reaching peace but rather a
mechanism through which just pace can be reached in time. He
also noted the this proposed mechanism dealt with solving the
Palestinian issue and that there should also be such proposals
for the Lebanese and Syrian peace tracks.
The meeting between Moussa and Obeid came on the
sidelines of the Arab League Secretary-General's participation
at the annual Arab Capital Markets Conference during which he
addressed the attending businessmen, economists and reporters
at the opening session.
The 9th Arab Capital Markets Conference, which is largest
Middle East gathering of financial and business institutions
will also be addressing the issues of a just and
comprehensive peace for Palestine as well as the
reconstruction of Iraq and the opportunities for Arab
businesses in this field.
