- Story Text: The military campaign in Afghanistan is going "well"
according to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and
President of the European Union, Belgian Prime Minister Guy
Verhofstadt.
Following a meeting between U.S. and European
officials in Washington, DC, U.S. Secretary of State Colin
Powell said that he hoping the United Nations will move
forward with a resolution to allow a foreign security force to
operate in Afghanistan.
Powell said that the U.S. continues to coordinate with its
allies on both the military and financial front of the war on
terrorism.
Visiting European Union President Guy Verhofstadt said
that in addition to supporting the U.S.'s efforts, the EU has
developed its own plans to counter terrorism.
Verhofstadt said EU member were also hopeful that the UN
would take action soon to deliver a mandate to station an
international force to wartorn Afghanistan.
"As you know a huge number of European countries are
candidates to participate in the security force in
Afghanistan. We hope to reach a UN resolution by Friday. So we
think things are going in the right direction," he said.
The two leaders also discussed the Israel-Palestinian
conflict. Both leaders said that Palestnian President Yasir
Arafat needs to take additional action to stop the violence.
Verhofstadt and Powell agreed that progress in negotiations
could only take place once the violence has subsided.
