- Story Text: Powell says Saturday elections in Afghanistan will
mark "historic day," expects high voter turnout.
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Friday
(October 8, 2004) said Saturday's elections in Afghanistan
would be a "historic day" for the Afghan people.
Saturday's elections (October 9) mark the first elections
since the Taliban government was overthrown three years ago.
"I am sure the Afghan people will go to the polls in
strength and demonstrate to the world that in three years
they have gone from the tyranny of the Taliban to the
freedom of the ballot box," Powell said.
Powell also said that he there will be some violence
on Saturday (October 9, 2004) .
"Will there be those in Afghanistan who try to stop it?
Who commit acts of violence? Probably. I am sure there
will be. They cannot stop this process," Powell said.
The U.S. Secretary of State did note that the process
could take up to several weeks
"It is not going to be instantaneous results like we
are used to in other parts of the world so we should be
patient, "Powell said.
Powell made his comments at a joint press availability
with the President of El Salvador, Elias Antonio Saca
